OkayRacer is a 19-year-old prodigy, born in Queens, having grown up in Long Island, NY, but trying to make a name for himself worldwide! Growing up over East, he's been able to take in a lot of influence from artists of all levels, including some of the biggest names in the industry like Young Thug, Future, Carti, etc. I draw some similarities to the likes of some of those big names too like Young Bans or a Lil' Tecca, but not to be confused; he's moving at his own pace, making his own lane in the big city.
He's another one of those artists that can exceed expectations, combining a lot of elements from an array of genres, mostly Rap, and utilizing them to make uniquely intriguing sounds. There's a lot of trap inspiration within his songs, inclusive of bass knocking beats with appearances of piano, claps, 808's like latest song "SALSA", produced by Skelli. He's constantly drawing inventiveness from different pieces of work, but one of his favorites he notes is artist Beck.
"Beck is my favorite because he was basically Kanye before Kanye. None of his albums sounds the sam as the other. Every single album contains a new fresh sound; I wanna be like him in a sense of not letting myself stay in one box."
Okayracer has collaborated with some other artists including punk duo, poptropicaslutz! whom we've covered a bit in the past. This collaboration produced probably one of my favorite songs actually titled "iishot Meg Thee Stallion" which is one of those fast paced headbangers that almost makes you want to smash a vase or something.
He has done a bit of producing/engineering, but he's very much locked in on the artistry side of things noting, "I'm an artist and that's what people have known me for". He did leave open the idea of getting back into producing, but all the same he's got a great ear for what he raps over so well.
Be on the lookout as he's got some heat coming at the end of the month; July 30th. The single is titled "Wocky Slush", which should have some collaboration. Further on, Okayracer has high hopes for himself down the line:
"To be honest I see myself becoming an essential artist, that when people hear my name they’ll argue about which one of my albums is the best. I see myself eventually giving a Grammy speech. That’s the level I’m aiming for; I see myself being someone who’s special to the music community even if I’m not a chart topping artist." He's got a lot to give too.
Check him out!
