Blue’s “oh, lover” Introduces an Ambitious New Sound

Ever since the first teaser for "oh, lover" surfaced in January, fans have eagerly awaited Blue's debut single. This past Friday, that wait finally came to an end, offering listeners a first glimpse into her upcoming debut album, it's not fair, my only weapon is my pen.

Although "oh, lover" wasn't originally intended to be the album's lead single, Blue revealed in a video diary that fan response to an early teaser changed those plans. Paired with her conversational lyricism, Blue conveys the emotional turmoil of unrequited love. In the first verse she pleads, “Just give me something to feel, I need the rollercoaster/It's all about amusement/The mus— the fuckin' music, babe”, capturing the frustration of love that never fully materializes. 

The single’s release also marks a new chapter for the artist. Formerly releasing music as Leyla Blue, the New York City native approached this project as a fresh start. That meant a new artist name, new sound and most notably a new “finsta”-style Instagram account, @tookittoodeep, to document the creative process behind her debut album as Blue. Alongside Grammy-winning producer, Noah Ehler, the pair have created an incredibly unique and intimate sound. 

In the months leading up to the release, Blue kept fans invested through a steady stream of teaser clips, production breakdowns and behind-the-scenes videos. While breaking down the production of “oh, lover” for fans, Ehler and Blue shared that the song has over 294 audio tracks, with over 100 vocal tracks in the chorus alone. Rather than relying on a traditional lead vocal, the chorus is built almost entirely from harmonies, doubles and ad-libs, creating the song's lush, immersive sound. The result is a dense wall of vocals that encapsulates listeners in the emotional intimacy Blue conveys. Ehler, recognized for his work on Kendrick Lamar’s “GNX”, showcases his impressive compositional versatility as a producer, shifting genres entirely to work on this project. 

Blue has also teased clips of tracks “out on this loveless town!”, “primadonna”, “casualty” and “insidious” on her page, leaving fans with a lot to look forward to. All in all, “oh, lover” has beautifully introduced us to the level of craft behind Blue’s new sound as we anticipate the arrival of  it’s not fair, my only weapon is my pen.
